Luther Hager (1786-1853), of Plattsburgh, New York, married Sarah Addoms, the daughter of Major John Addoms, one of the original settlers of Plattsburgh,. The Hager-Addoms estate in Cumberland Head on Lake Champlain housed Fort Izard, built in 1812 to defend New York from a British invasion from Quebec. The 1814 Battle of Plattsburgh was fought on Hager land. This unusual naive portrait pictures Hagar in a militia uniform next to a 15 star American flag. Set in a gilded copper frame with cast foliate border, the reverse with an aperture containing a lock of hair and a piece of red ribbon. Within is a card identifying the sitter. 2 3/8 inches high.
