James Scouler (c.1740-1812), a native of Edinburgh, Scouler studied at the Duke of Richmond's Gallery and the St. Martin's Lane Academy. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1780-1787 and at the Society of Artists from 1761-1768. There are several examples of Scouler's works in the collection of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. Mrs. Foskett places him "among the ranks of the great miniaturists."
