Leopoldine, Countess Apponyi von Nagy-Apponyi (1804-1870) was the daughter of Georg, Count Apponyi von Nagy-Apponyi (1780-1849) and his wife, Anna, Countess Zichy von Zich (1780-1866). In 1824, the year of this portrait, Leopoldine married Karl von u zu Franckenstein (1798-1845).

Daffinger was apprenticed to the Vienna Porcelain Factory, where he worked until 1812, whilestudying with Füger at the Academy of Vienna. A favorite of the Court, Daffinger painted most every member of the Imperial family, including serveral portrait of the Duke of Reichstadt. Additional sitters included Grand Duke Nicholas Mikhailowitch, Princess Melanie Metternich, and Baroness Betty von Rothschild.
