Specialised in furniture and objet d’art from the Art Deco period (1920-1930)
On the 7th of June 2006 Alain Marcelpoil launched his gallery with an exhibition on the works of André Sornay, a cabinetmaker, interior designer and decorator from Lyon. The items exhibited, from the Art Deco period, typify the main characteristics of geometry, practicality and elegance of this furniture range, featuring pure lines and harmonious proportions, where the use of metal, lacquer and fine wood combine with a rational use of space.
While endeavouring to promote André Sornay’s works for the last 15 years, Alain Marcelpoil has nonetheless remained open to other creations.
At first an Art Nouveau enthusiast, he turned to Art Deco in the 80’s through well-advised and passionate collectors. A native of Lyon, Alain Marcelpoil, then took a keen interest in 20th century artists from his region. That is how he discovered André Sornay whose work was utterly modern, personal and particularly innovative. Indeed, thanks to his technique of ‘’cloutage’’ this inventive creator manufactured in small series ‘’ various works of art at modest prices, unique items’’.
Recognized as a major actor in avant-garde art, André Sornay, after keeping away from the public for a long time, now occupies the foreground of the national and international art scene: in Paris, Salon du Collectionneur, Pavillon des Arts et du Design, and of course, B.R.A.F.A (Belgian Art fair), Biennale de Monaco, Design Art London, The New York International Art & Design Fair . These are all prestigious events in which Alain Marcelpoil, a member of the Compagnie Nationale des Experts, the French National Company of Valuers (C.N.E.) and of the Syndicat National des Antiquaires, the French National Antique Dealers Trade Association (S.N.A) takes part.
In September 2010 the Alain Marcelpoil Gallery is delighted to take part in the famous ‘Biennale des Antiquaires’ exhibition at the Grand Palais prestigious venue.
