Avakian Inks Student Scholarship Agreement with Central Saint Martins
Avakian, master jewellers to royalty and celebrities with headquarters in Geneva, is thrilled to announce the signing of a three year sponsorship agreement with Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design in London. Avakian will fund the cost of studies of one final year student annually for each of the next three academic years.
Against a backdrop of rising university fees and student debt, Avakian’s new working relationship with one of the world’s most high profile design schools reflects a new direction in the brand’s philanthropy, which has until now largely focussed on medical and children’s charities.
A demanding competition process for the first ever Avakian Central Saint Martins scholarship will see around 30 Second Year BA Jewellery students submit their portfolio of work to judges. A shortlist of five students will be invited to an interview panel this summer, comprising Avakian director Corinne Avakian and Caroline Broadhead, Central Saint Martins BA Jewellery course leader. Competition finalists will be given the opportunity to explain the thinking behind how they curated their portfolio and articulate their vision for their career as a jeweller. The winner of the scholarship will also benefit from a 6 month paid internship at the Geneva workshops of the third-generation family jeweller.
“Avakian is very excited to support a new generation of talent. We’ll be looking for imaginative, original work, backed up by the ability to develop ideas and communicate them visually,” says Avakian director, Corinne Avakian.
“While higher education is now such a financial burden for many of our students, it is fantastic that there is industry support out there for them,” says BA Jewellery course tutor Caroline Broadhead.
