If you're like me, you may go to certain movies, like the recently released Great Gatsby, just for the wonderful period costumes and settings.  Always interested in traditional techniques being used today, my curiosity lead me to the world reknowned lacemaker Solstiss. Since it was founded in 1879 in Northern France, Solstiss has been providing lace, beading and other adornments for dresswear that includes among others, the wedding dresses of Grace Kelly (1956) and Kate Middleton (2011). Solstiss' extraordinary work is a perfect example of an art form that has been passed down through generations and is as relevant now as it was in 1879 and before.  Also featured in this newsletter are two stories about art and philanthropy.  Avakian, the Swiss jeweler, has announced a 3 year sponsorship with Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London; and the Clark Hulings Fund will be accepting grant requests in September from early career painters and sculptors.  Bravo to these two initiatives...Meg
